Women have for so long fought for liberties that are granted to them. We see women participating not only in their respective communities as movers of their generation, but also in the international arena where in certain countries like Bangladesh, Germany and Phillipines where the Prime Minister or President is a woman, However, there is still a lot of work to be done in order to reclaim our place equally side by side with men. This is part of the effort to help the fairer sex, especially in the debating scene.
The Women’s Intervarsity Debating Tournament is an annual event that is conducted in Australia and is part of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Association (AIDA)’s constitution. Every year, one University in Australia makes an initiative to host the event and is then participated by other Australian Universities. Although the tournament is open to all, for logistic reason, it never has any participants from Asia.
However, the scenario has changed. More participants have emerged from the Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, South East Asian Countries, India and Pakistan. The tournament has now become an annual tournament in Malaysia, and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has the privilege to host this tournament for the first time. It would be a good exposure for the Debaters to host such an event as well as to further encourage more women to participate in debating competitions.
The main reason for hosting such a tournament is because although the numbers of women participating in debates are the same as men, maybe even more, it is strange that their achievements and visibilities are not as obvious as the men’s. In all the finals of international and local tournament (All Asian 2001& 2002, National Varsity Debates 2001&2002, MMU Open, IIU Open, UTM Open) there were only 1 or 2 women in the finals and NONE in the adjudication panel for many of these local tournaments. Nevertheless, with the Women’s Debating Competition taking place in a more active pace, we see a healthy competition amongst the women as well as men. This can be seen in the (UiTM Open, Royals 2003, 2004 & 2005, All-Asians 2003, 2004 & 2005, MMU Open, UPM GSD) where, a good number of women reached the finals and a few were seen in Adjudication panels. Such apparent achievements can be seen in the Malaysian debating scene.
It is important that this competition is continued for the betterment of the Asian Debating Scene as well as to further encourage women to be actively involved in Social, Economic, Political and Humanitarian issues that grip the world today.
The format used will be the Australasians format or as follows, there shall be 1 team on each side of the Government and the Opposition, where each team consists of 3 people. The 1 adjudicator per 1 team rule applies where each team which enters has to send 1 adjudicator in as well. Thus, we expect participation of 100-200 women from all over Asia participating in this event.
With that, this year’s Women’s IV will be held on the 16th till the 18th June 2006 right here in the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and is open to students of any Universities. This tournament is by women of UTMARA for all the women out there, so come join us!
