Phase 5’s (www.phasefive.org) 2006 monsoon learning expedition will take us to Dahanu. Given that it’s the monsoons, we can use this opportunity to understand the politics of rice and experience farming one of the most staple cereals in the world.
The experience would include hands-on work on rice fields, transplanting the rice saplings from the nursery bed to another ready bed. Rice growing is a cultural experience closely intertwined with the lives of the indigenous community of adivasis who live here. A component of discussion with local community will be included.
While this is the crux of the weekend, an introduction session that includes a brief social-political analysis of the region will also be given before getting into the issue of rice.
Arrangements:
Participants will share comfortable and clean cottages on the farm with running water facilities. Food will be simple and hygienic.
About Dahanu:
Dahanu is located on the west coast of India in the state of Maharashtra bordering Gujarat. Famous for its chikoo fruit, Dahanu is surrounded by greenery on three sides and the Arabian Sea on the West. Other fruits grown in the area are coconuts, mangoes, lychees, and a variety of vegetables. Recently with the Dahanu Thermal Power Station coming up in Dahanu, there has been a concern among the farmers and business community about the environment in Dahanu.
