Increased privatization and financial market liberalization has opened up a renewed focus on the issue of regulation and corporate governance. Reforms have increased the economic power of many firms, which may have had a negative impact both on the welfare of society and economic efficiency. Consequently, this has renewed the need for an appropriate legal and regulatory framework, which would help to protect firm capital providers and safeguard consumers. Indeed, such regulation is instrumental for the safeguarding of investments, both financial and human.
The proposed one-day workshop at the University of Manchester on 17th November 2006 intends to discuss the following two issues in detail:
The interrelationship between regulatory shortcomings and corporate governance both in developed and developing economies.
The role of corporate governance in economic development.
This multi-disciplinary workshop aims to generate a cluster of research ideas based on these two themes. We invite papers which explore these themes from policy-makers, international organizations and academia from disparate disciplines such as development studies, law, economics and history. The papers could be conceptual/theoretical or empirical/ evidence-based case studies.
