“YOUTH AND THE OCEANS – CONFERENCE 2006” WILL BE A CELEBRATION OF THE ‘POWER OF ONE’ AND YOUTH INVOLVEMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITY IN THE PROVINCE 1997-2006”

“STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS”

Date/Place: Friday, October 13th – Hampton Hall Theatre, Marine Institute, St. John’s

Day 2: Saturday, October 14th “Clean up the World”
Beach/Shoreline/Underwater Cleanup and Pumpkin Carving Contest
at Middle Cove Beach

“Through this annual conference, Ocean Net works to give an environmental voice to junior and high school students from schools and communities throughout the province who share a common concern for the marine environment. Ocean Net recently spearheaded its 1000th beach, shoreline and underwater cleanup since 1997, and this 8th annual youth conference on the ocean environment will give us an opportunity to celebrate this significant milestone with our youth volunteers who have played such an important role in Ocean Net’s environmental success in Newfoundland & Labrador.” - Robert O’Brien, Founder/Chair, Ocean Net

Ocean Net is gearing up to welcome 200 junior and high school students and teachers from schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to its 8th annual “Youth and the Oceans – Conference 2006 taking place at the Marine Institute on Friday, October 13th. The event, which will celebrate “The Power of One”, will feature a range of speakers with backgrounds in education, the environment and the private sector. A one-hour “Youth Forum” gives a voice to the environmental concerns shared by the delegates, and is an opportunity for youth from schools throughout the province to share their successes with their peers.

There will be a number of youth awards presented to schools and individuals during the conference. There is no registration fee, although schools are encouraged to have students undertake a beach cleanup prior to the conference. A nutrition break and lunch will be provided.

On Day 2 of the conference, delegates will take part in a cleanup of Middle Cove Beach, joining 40 million volunteers in 130 countries worldwide taking part in this year’s “Clean up the World” event, a global initiative on behalf of the environment held annually in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). This is the 5th year that Ocean Net has included “Clean up the World” in its youth conference.

“As a young person who is very interested in the environment, particularly in the oceans, Ocean Net’s “Youth and the Oceans Conference” is a fantastic place to meet environmental leaders as well as other youth that share my interest and concerns. Last year I had the opportunity to meet professors from Memorial University and public environmental activists; it gave me an opportunity to learn more about the threats facing our oceans and options for things that each of us can do to help. I was delighted to be part of a celebration of environmentalism and conservation when Ocean Net presented awards to communities and individuals who have made a difference in helping achieve a clean ocean environment.” -Michelle Wille, Vancouver, B.C. (MUN)
