With 50% of people in the world estimated to die due to four chronic diseases: CVD, diabetes, chronic lung diseases and some cancers, linked to three risk factors: tobacco, diet and lack of physical exercise, 400 million people, or one in ten of the world's population, will be suffering from diabetes alone by 2020. The Oxford Health Alliance (www.oxha.org) stands for innovative action with diverse stakeholders around these three risk factors. Young people are central to this and are the focus of our many current projects.
The European Youth Summit on chronic disease prevention will take place at the European Parliament in Brussels on October 11th. Here a panel of 9 articulate young people from a range of Member States (aged 18-24) will examine the degree of focus and activity around chronic diseases given by the European Union. The creation of a dialogue between key players in the EU and the panel will assist the development of policy.
