retary-General to conduct ‘an in-depth study on the question of violence against children’. In its resolution 2002/92 on the rights of the child, the Commission on Human Rights suggested that the Secretary-General “appoint an independent expert to direct the study, in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization”. The same year, the General Assembly, in resolution 57/190 reaffirmed its request and encouraged the Secretary-General to appoint an independent expert to direct the study. Periodically, since his appointment, the Independent Expert appointed to lead the study, Prof. Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, reports on the study developments to the General Assembly.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2006
The Secretary-General’s report will be presented on 11 October 2006 at the General Assembly. The report contains the main findings and recommendations developed through the study process during the last two years of activities. Besides the Secretary-General’s report, the Independent Expert responsible for the Study, Professor Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, will also launch a book with a more detailed version of the study findings and recommendations as well as child friendly materials. Key partners in the study development process, including representatives from Governments, international organizations, civil society entities and children in side activities and other simultaneous events during the General Assembly will be encouraged to participate in the launch and related activities.
Before the launch, there will be preperatory meeting for children and young people at the UNICEF HQ from 8 to 11 October 2006. |
