Greetings from the CASP 2007 Conference Planning Team. The NWT is honoured to be hosting the CASP Annual 2007 conference in October 5-8, 2007.
We would like to tell you about our conference theme… Embracing Life – Choosing Your Future / Profitez de la vie – Choisissez votre avenir and how it came to be. February 2006 we gathered as the initial planning team with representatives from across the NWT … youth, Elders, NWT Territorial Suicide Prevention Steering Committee members, NGOs, Aboriginal organizations. At this meeting our theme was born. The rainbow image came from a Dene Elder… “Seeing a rainbow in the sky signifies a sign of life… hope for the future.”
We hope that you will come to Yellowknife to take part in our conference as a participant and/or submit a presentation for one of the following:
Workshops - interactive group session based on a specific topic related to the conference themes
Case/Research Presentations - small interactive group sessions based on a specific discussion of actual cases or research
Poster displays - participants may submit a poster that will be displayed at the conference venue that addresses suicide issues.
We have some exciting speakers and workshop presenters who will address suicide prevention, intervention and postvention areas that pertain to:
Survivors
Caregivers
Community Development
Research
Youth
Culture and traditional healing.
Let us tell you a little about Yellowknife. Yellowknife is a culturally rich capital thriving with diversity, and home to over 20,000 people. Located on the shores of the beautiful Great Slave Lake, only 512 km south of the Arctic Circle, we are known for our outdoor recreation, midnight sun, aurora borealis and an unusual blend of northern culture - a city where history is found throughout a modern, bustling metropolis.
Yellowknife is literally built on gold, with the tunnels of two, now depleted, gold mines burrowing deep beneath the streets. Yellowknife is the center for transportation, communication, recreation, commerce, tourism, health care, mining and government for the Northwest Territories. With the discovery of diamonds, Yellowknife is now known as the “Diamond Capital of North America”.
To find out more about Yellowknife explore the City of Yellowknife’s website: www.yellowknife.ca.
On behalf of the conference planning committee, we look forward to showing you our northern hospitality.
See you in October 2007 in Yellowknife.
