"What role has trauma played in the lives of youth before and since becoming homeless? What do homeless youth have to say about their challenges and needs? How do families, the broader community and support services assist in and/or hinder the growth of these youth? What is the impact of social exclusion and poverty on self-identity and future ambitions?
Based on separate research projects that involved interviews with 150 homeless youth in the Maritime provinces, these presentations will share initial findings regarding first, the role of traumatic experiences in the lives of youth both before and during times of homelessness, and second, how poverty and social exclusion are experienced by, and influence the self-identity of, homeless youth. Youth participants shared personal descriptions and insights regarding their experiences and also responded to a number of standardized questionnaires related to their histories of trauma experiences, effects of these experiences, coping strategies they have used, the role of family and community in their lives, and means for continued growth in spite of the challenges they have faced. The research was carried out under a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
Preliminary findings suggest that highly stressful experiences and trauma are significant challenges faced by most of these youth before as well as during homelessness. The presence of personal, family and community risk factors as well as those factors that facilitate coping well will be explored in relation to youth experiences of trauma and its effects. Implications for services will be discussed, and a panel of youth and service providers will respond to these research findings.
