The installation deals with the monument as a symbol, iconic emblem of political and historical information.
Monuments have been created for thousands of years, and they are often the most durable and popular symbols of civilizations.
In his present work, the artist Tarek Zaki penetrates to the core of the monument by rendering new meanings to old symbols.
‘Monument X’ is dismantled into uniform pieces. Sections of columns, plinths, arches and sculpted body parts are deliberately cut and grouped, and thus the traditional vertical apprehension of a monument is being replaced by a new horizontal perspective, which provokes different questions. Is the monument being built or is it being dismantled? How should the pieces be put together? What would it represent when assembled?...
‘Monument X’ is a puzzle that only the viewer’s imagination could solve and complete.
