[Poll] Young Professionals and The Millennium Development Goals
June 27, 2007 - 04:24 AM
|
|
At the core of IYPS2008 will be the question "How can we, as young professionals, help to achieve the Millennium Development Goals?"
I am interested to hear some initial views on this topic and am setting up a poll to try to collect the preliminary feedback of people planning to attend IYPS2008.
Please answer the poll questions, and if you want to elaborate on your answers you can do so as a reply to this discussion board thread.
If you do not know much about the Millennium Development Goals at this stage, do not worry, as we will be talking about them a lot more over the coming year before IYPS2008.

thanks SJ. yes there is much we can do - and it all helps!
- advocacy in our work places to ensure our companies / organisations are doing what they can towards achieving the MGDs
- awareness raising in our work places, networks, etc. so people know what the MDGs are and what they can do
- starting and supporting projects that contribute to the MDGs with our expertise, skills, finances, etc.
i think something many of us in developed countries forget is that achieving the MDGs requires policy, cultural and social changes in our countries - so we need to push for that on our governments and in our communities!

Thanks Cam.
I'd be really interested to hear about what different people's organisations / companies are doing to help the MDGs.
Sometimes the big companies can really help by their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. For example, I know my company supports a lot of AIDs / HIV programmes in Africa.
I'd also be interested to hear if anyone on the blog in a developing country has had experience of working on projects with the big multinationals, and if their view of it is as rosie as ours?

I actually think awareness of the MDG's is a valid issue in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Communicating what they are, but also providing examples of what other people are doing to make a difference can give people much needed a frame of reference so as to give them a starting point for their thinking about action.

The UN has just released a report on the progress towards the Millennium Development Goals at the mid point from 2000 to 2015
http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/pdf/mdg2007.pdf
This is a really good starting point for people wanting to know more about the MDG's.
It's not pleasant reading though... there have been some improvements but there is still a long, long way to go.

Interesting what you were saying Cam about promoting CSR within our workplaces...
There is an article in the Australian HR Monthly magazine this month about how HR needs to take the lead in promoting CSR within organisations (well, we all know it's everyone's job but as an HR professional I'm willing to do my bit). Unfortunately the article was very vague and didn't give any guidance about the types of things that I could promote within my company to make change.
What would be great (and it may already exist) is a website or resource titled "things you can do in your workplace to make a difference" (or something along those lines). Anyone know of anything like this?

Britt,
The Business in the Community site has loads of good case studies about CSR projects from UK businesses, and which can be searched by project category
