DetailsLe projet
Pikangikum First Nation, an Ojibway community of about 2300+ people in remote northwestern Ontario. On June 8th, the Eenchokay Birchstick School (the only school), which housed over 700 students, burned down.

A new school was already planned to replace the overcrowded, old one; which Indian and Northern Affairs Canada had allotted some money for, —but not until 2010. In the mean time the students will need support. Generous donors can help by giving school supplies and equipment.

“After the school burned down I became really depressed,” Rhonda told me. “I watched the community go into mourning. [The school] was the community hub of activity. They don't know how to cope. Please, help the parents and help the kids."

What you can do:
I KNOW WE CAN ALL HELP. Send “Letters of Love” to the people of Pikangikum, including the parents, teachers and especially the children and youth, to offer their support and to let them know that others care. THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE LONG LETTERS. Just words of encouragement that will keep Pikangikum strong through this latest crisis and their struggle to find temporary classrooms by the time school starts in the fall.
Because of colonialism Pikangikum First Nation is the suicide capital of the world. Too many times we separate people into “us” and “them.” This is our chance to show that we are all together in compassion and understanding. Strength can be shared! Resiliency is catching!

Please send a positive message to Pikangikum—we know this will make a difference, especially to young people.
All letters will be translated into Ojibway, and will be read aloud on the local radio station.
