The Branding AIDS Conference is presented by Gendering Adolescent AIDS Prevention (GAAP). The Conference will examine issues of corporate branding and consumer activism in terms of their relevance to the HIV/AIDS pandemic:
To what extent have recent celebrity crusades and advertising campaigns (Product Red™, Aldo Fights AIDS™ etc.) produced a new HIV/AIDS visibility? How does this visibility affect social consciousness, consumer behaviour, and the lives of people living with AIDS? How has ‘Africa’ been represented—and misrepresented—in recent campaigns? Are corporate charity and responsibility one and the same? How is ‘consumer activism’ distinct from grassroots activism? Could the ‘right’ consumption constitute a viable solution to tackling the disease?
Dr. Lisa Ann RICHEY of the Danish Institute of International Studies, and co-author of From Band Aid to Brand Aid will deliver the keynote address.
Other speakers include:
Dr. Vinh-Kim NGUYEN of the University of Montreal, author of Antiretroviral Globalism, Biopolitics, and Therapeutic Citizenship;
Dr. Colleen O'MANIQUE of Trent University, author of Neoliberalism and AIDS Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa;
Prof. Rick SALUTIN of the University of Toronto, columnist for the Globe and Mail;
Dr. Rinaldo WALCOTT of the University of Toronto, Canada Research Chair, Social Justice and Cultural Studies, and author of Black Like Who?
Refreshments will be provided.
