| Teen Empowerment's Youth Conference is an all day event for youth to speak out about issues that concern them, and is attended by about 1000 youth, youth workers, teachers, administrators, police, politicians, and media representatives from across Boston. The day includes interactive community building sessions, which are a chance to build relationships and for youth to speak about about issues that they face, a job/career fair, a Hip Hop Lunch, and a presentation completely written and performed by youth including dance, rap, song, theater, and spoken word, which raises awareness about issues in society, and how youth are affected and can affect those issues. Past issues have included 9/11, gangs, corporate scandels, high stakes testing, inequality between urband and suburban schools, boy/girl relationships, history, social action, institutional racism, racial/ethnic understanding, homophobia, and sexism and ageism. Connections are made for youth between society's values, the distribution of resources and policies, individuals' behavior and power and powerlessness in society. An open mic speak-out allows youth in the audience to speak out directly about issues brought up by the performances. Social actions that have come out of this event include 800 letters written to the governor, plans for collaboration with other youth groups to plan rallies and protests, and an organizing meeting held with the school superintendent. |
