Wireless networking is basically what the name says. Enabling computers to network or communicate without the limitation of traditional wire and cable based systems. This means that access to the Internet in Africa is no longer limited to urban areas. The need for data quality phone lines... or any kind of phone line at all has been removed. Combining different technologies can allow even the remotest of schools to have access to current educational materials via the Internet far cheaper then building libraries, stocking them with books, and continually restocking them to keep the information current. Satellite systems can bring a connection to almost anywhere in the world, and then radio based systems can distribute that connection to the different schools in the area
The workshop aims to:
* Bring together stakeholders to exchange views on and consider the efficacy/sustainability of wireless technologies for rural schools and rural development
* Discuss a research project commissioned by SchoolNet Africa relating to the use of wireless technologies in African schools
* Discuss the efficacy of using rural schools as centres for ICT access and ICT applications for rural development
* Allow for consultations for possible partnerships and collaborations between the various stakeholders present.
The workshop will interrogate the research finding, the various presentations and discuss the efficacy of wireless solutions to obtain development objectives in Africa. It is hoped that the workshop will contribute to the research, enrichment of experiences and eventually conclude on priority follow-up programs and/or projects to advance efforts in ICT for development in Africa.
