As part of the project activities aimed at creating in-person, national scale networking of youth efforts in Nigeria. Creating Local Connections in West Africa- Nigeria (www.projects.takingitglobal.org/clcwestafrica-nigeria) is hosting a 2 day, 2nd National Conference in Kano city, Kano State Nigeria. The first National Conference on Building Sustainable Growth and Development in our Communities with the theme 'Youth Access and Participation was held in Calabar, Cross River state on the 12 -14 October 2007. The conference achieved its set objectives by providing inspiration and information on how young people could take active roles in their communities and get involve in opportunities so as to be empowered for leadership positions. In line with that and to follow up on the major successes recorded during and after the first National Youth meeting, CLCWA Nigeria implementing team is happy to announce the 2nd National Youth Conference in Kano, and is scheduled as follows:

Date: 9-10 May, 2008

Venue: ECWA Conference Hall, Kano. [Temporary]
Time: 9.00am- 5pm daily

Around the world, greater engagement of youths and communities are becoming feature of many governments both public and private organizations. Young People expect to be involved and to have a say in the business of government and the decisions of organizations that affect their interests. Many are concerned about low levels of development and youth participation in planning and implementation of development activities in our communities which have contributed to reduction in the trust in public and private institutions. This, in turn, affects decision- making and the achievement of social and economic development, and the environmental sustainability outcomes. Accordingly, some governments and organizations are responding with commitment to effective engagement of young people in developing programmes and projects. The need to provide a platform for young people’s participation and access becomes vital in order to guarantee sustainability and impact most especially in issues of service delivery, African Peer Review Mechanism [APRM] budget tracking, MDGs, NEEDS, SEEDS, LEEDS, and CEEDS, also in Mr President YarAdua Seven Points Agenda [PSPA].

In many different contexts and at local, state, regional, national levels, there are private, individuals and community organizations engaging in ways that are making a difference at worth hearing about and learning from, [good practices].

This conference will provide delegates the opportunity to hear and share experiences with various stakeholders especially the youths. The conference is being designed to encourage youth’s active engagement/involvement and participation in PSPA and to develop concepts on how to integrate rural communities into development initiatives of government and private sectors as well as to encourage the development and maintenance of productive relationships between governments/ organizations and citizens/clients and other stakeholders. This will make it possible for young people to have access to their leaders/representatives through active and useful engagement as well as to get involved in opportunities around their communities through participation in policy development and implementation.

This three day event will provide participants with the opportunity to explore key regional and national issues/ challenges, share experiences, broaden their networks, develop action plans for key community development challenges, build their capacity on leadership and critical skills for community youth issues.

The objectives of this conference include:

• Introduction of the various policies and frameworks of PSPA and to identify challenges associated with incorporation of ICTs for Development and youth participation into the PSPA.
• Discuss how youth can participate actively in promoting, monitoring and sustaining development activities related to 7 Points Agenda of Mr President,
• Promote understanding of the concept of Youth mainstreaming and Participation in policy frameworks such as African Peer Review Mechanism [APRM], NEEDS II, Service delivery, and sustainable development.
• Explore what works: Showcase innovation and promote good practice in young peoples’ initiatives and participation in community development,
• Discuss and develop conceptual and theoretical frameworks and directions for the future with some key stakeholders,
• Build understanding and evidence of leadership, capacity and capability issues for youths/community and government/institutions,
• Develop the capacity of youth in acts of lobbying political office holders so as to showcase their voice and advocate for change in their communities.
• Create ongoing national and regional networks and collaboration creating community interest around issue awareness.
• Develop holistic sustainable strategies on CLCWA implementation in Nigeria.
