DetailsAbout
The 2008 Dare to Dream Media & Arts Festival (April 16-19) joins the Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Affairs in celebrating New York City’s 5th Annual Immigrant Heritage Week (April 14-20), a city-wide celebration that honors the experiences and contributions of immigrants in New York City. Established by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2004, Immigrant Heritage Week is a rich collection of free or low-cost programs that build cross-cultural understanding between diverse New Yorkers.

The three day Dare to Dream Media & Arts Festival will highlight the artistic talents of New York City’s immigrant youth at some of the city’s premiere cultural institutions including, The Franklin H. Williams Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute and The Queens Museum of Art.

The Dare to Dream Media & Arts Festival is also the culmination of the Dare to Dream Project, a media arts initiative that uses immigration as a basis to teach media and arts to inner city youth. Since January 2008, 5th grade students from Brooklyn’s P.S. 24 have utilized the role of immigrants in their community and the concept of cultural identity as inspiration for creative projects utilizing a variety of tools and techniques including photography, film/video and visual art.

The festival launches on April 16th with a multi-media opening night boasting film/video screenings, art exhibition, audio storytelling from Radio Rootz and a performance by the Caribbean Repertory Theater, live painting by The Trust Your Struggle Art Collective, and an interactive experience with the video game, ICED (I Can End Deportation) which puts players in the shoes of an immigrant to illustrate unfair immigration laws.

April 18th, day 2 of the festival will showcase the work of students at P.S. 24 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn who have participated in the Dare to Dream Project. The festival culminates on April 19th from 12:00 – 5:00pm with Through Immigrant Eyes: A Digital Storytelling Festival - an afternoon celebration of visual media on the topics of immigrant experiences at the Queens Museum of Art.

The Dare to Dream Media & Arts Festival and Dare to Dream Project are produced by Bronx born Dominican entrepreneur, community activist and visionary Joel Mejia, whose mission is to increase media literacy as a tool for empowerment among immigrant youth.
