Purple Images in partnership with Action Africa Volunteers and other partners , have come together and are mobilizing 1000 young unemployed graduate volunteers from different Kenyan communities to support Peace building and reconstruction efforts in the Rift Valley from June to December 2008 through monthly work camps initiative we are calling ‘ National Youth Coalition for Peace and Reconstruction ’ As you know, the youth were the biggest culprits and victims for the recent ethnic violence and so mobilizing them to work in the reconstruction will go along way to ensure sustainable peace in the region. The youth Volunteers will live in the community working in peace building activities such as art for peace, Sports for peace, HIV/AIDS education, rebuilding houses and schools , teaching in schools among other activities We are in the process of fundraising for the programme and we plan to launch the activity as a national project on 28th May 2008. We urgently need about Kshs 50,000 ( about $700) to enable us launch this activity succesfully. We shall be inviting the Prime Minister or the Vice President to preside over the media launch activity. We want to create a movement of young people in Kenya contributing positively to national development and after the Peace Programme, we shall get the volunteers to work with Members of Parliament in Constituency Development Programmes among other projects.
Following the launch, we expect more partners including the government and other organizations to come on board to support the initiative so we can roll out the activity. The initiative will greatly promote cohesion and tolerance among youth while giving them tangible work experiences what could also help them access job markets. Youths who successfully complete the programme will be given a certificate.
