UN Special Session on HIV/AIDS: An opportunity for youth involvement The United Nations General Assembly has decided to convene the first ever Special Session on HIV/AIDS. The Special Session will be held from 25 to 27 June 2001 in New York. The meeting aims to intensify international action to fight the epidemic and to mobilize the resources needed. This meeting has real potential to be more than just another talk shop about the epidemic.

The General Assembly is the main deliberative body of the United Nations. Its members represent 189 countries of the world. The decisions of the General Assembly carry the political weight of world opinion on major international issues. It is expected that governments attending the UNGASS will agree on a 'Declaration of Commitment' containing concrete targets for action to fight HIV/AIDS on an unprecedented scale. Because of this, the Special Session provides a unique opportunity for civil society to contribute to this global commitment in the fight against the epidemic and to make their voices heard among world leaders.

The Special Session also provides a platform for discussions and information sharing on all levels, from grass roots to global. We all have a collective responsibility to help ensure that the priorities of our regions, our countries and our communities are reflected in the outcome of the Special Session, and that the agreed commitments of our leaders are put into action.

How can you get involved?
One way you can get involved is to join a discussion group, which will be used to discuss the most important aspects of the 'Declaration of Commitment' and the UNGASS itself. This group is called the ADF Youth List and was originally established in August 2000 to allow young Africans to prepare for the African Development Forum conference. Since December, the list has expanded to include youth activists who were present at the conference, as well as a range of other interested people.

For the next three weeks, the list will be used to ensure that young people - all over the world - are able to voice their opinions in the build-up to the United Nations Special Session on HIV/AIDS. Presently, there are very few young people who are mobilized to attend - especially from the South, despite the impact of Aids on young people.
