DetailsAbout
Get ready for the next installment of the YoungDecisionMakers conferences, aimed to bring together interested young people, young adults and adult allies all in one room to further work on sustaining a national network for ongoing youth voice to decision makers. We will be studying the current YDM projects such as a Child Rights Monitoring initiative, which aims to support young people monitoring how well Canada is implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We will also review the Mosquito Product, which emits an irritating sound heard only by young ears being placed outside schools and stores, to see if it's discriminatory against youth. Along with analysis, we'll be brainstorming possible policy recommendations and action plans. Anyone registering for the YDM conference can also suggest and vote on additional topics for the agenda to be researched and discussed by the Network and to be added to next year's work plan for YDM. The third YDM meeting will be from November 20 to 23, 2008. Please find the attached registration package which contains the relevant information, including an agenda. The other two documents are our summary reports from the past meetings and our progress so far. For all interested individuals and organizations, the deadline for registration is November 15, 2008.

For more information, you can call The Students Commission's Toronto office at (416) 597-8297 and ask for Romil or Stephanie.

Thank you,
Romil Dharia

About YDM
Young Decision Makers (YDM) is a body of youth, young adults and adult allies from across the country working collaboratively to ensure that youth voice is heard in formal and informal decision making bodies (governments, schools and so on).

In the summer of 2006 The Students Commission and the Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement, with our partners throughout Canada were able to hire 18 youth summer staff, with diverse backgrounds and experiences. They identified YDM as a project that interested them and felt that they could contribute to making it a success. The initial goal was to collect data from youth about the concept of a national youth body and to answer the question, "is this something youth think is important and something that they want?"

Since then, something even more meaningful has occurred: young people have identified a desire to take a much more active role in decision-making, promoting the concept to their friends, classmates, teachers and other youth, engaging more and more people in the discussion about the development of not just a structure or a body - but to explore a process that can exist to ensure youth voice is heard in Canada.

YDM is based on the eight principles that young people that we surveyed from across the country found to be essential:
ÿ Inclusivity (Engaging all youth)
ÿ Youth-led
ÿ Participatory (Anyone who wants to get involved, can)
ÿ Adult partnership
ÿ Accountability
ÿ Representation
ÿ Young adult support;
ÿ Informal structure.

We are always looking for people to become a part of our network. As requests for consultations come in to The Students Commission and the Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement, we will continue to reach out to members in the network and ask you to share your thoughts, ideas, ambitions and voice! Stay tuned, there's always something happening.
