The ICPD+15 is ongoing. It can boost of a large number of participants from across Africa and beyond. To be specific, we have 120 from all over the world responding to the E-Consultation. The major week had been to introduce ourselves and evaluate how much we know of the ICPD.

This includes implementation, knowledge and target, obstacles and actions by individuals, groups and Government.

With the moderation at the moment, we are likely to develop a module of approach to ensure the implementation of the ICPD and enshrine a Monitoring and Evaluation Method for it.

Actually, this is an E-consortation and is still ongoing.

Here is the summary for week one:

SUMMARY WEEK ONE

1) How did you become aware of ICPD and its activities?

A little more than half of the respondents have never heard of the international framework, ICPD, and its related Programme of Action which touch upon issues like family planning, sexuality, reproductive health, sexually transmitted diseases, women’s rights and equality, and community participation in development.

The other half of the respondents have learned about ICPD during:

- Studies
- Involvement in a local NGO
- Involvement in an international NGO like the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS; World AIDS Campaign; CHOICE; and the Youth Coalition on Reproductive Health
- Participation in government efforts (Kenya specifically)

2) Do you know of efforts to specifically inform young people of ICPD activities?

Again, a little more than half of the respondents do not know of any efforts to inform young people about ICPD related activities.

The other half know of efforts either related specifically to the upcoming international and regional review of the status of ICPD or in more general terms:

- Local NGOs which seek to inform young people about ICPD issues or are planning to get involved in the upcoming 2009 ICPD review (aka ICPD@15)
- Global NGO efforts like the Youth Coalition on Reproductive Health; GYCA and CHOICE. These initiatives are also planning events for ICPD@15. Particular the Youth Coalition was mentioned in regard to its initiative to regionally train and empower young people to hold their government accountable for ICPD outcomes during the 2009 ICPD review.
- Global efforts like the international youth conference on Investing in Young People’s Health and Development
- Regional initiatives like Age Mission Initiative; and African Youth and Adolescent Network (AfriYAN)

A couple of participants offered some suggestions to improve efforts to inform young people about ICPD issues and activities:

- Organize sensitization programmes that talks about ICPD and related activities (such as local radio talk shows)
- More E-Consultations on ICPD
- Organize meetings and programmes in communities that invite young people focuses on ICDP activities
- Organize workshops and train youth people on ICPD activities: This way they can professionally pass the message across
- More publications on ICPD
- Governments could help spread the word
- The best way to reach a young person is through another young person like him/herself (peer education)

3) Have you or do you know of other young people who have been involved in ICPD activities including the implementation process?

Two-thirds of respondents had no knowledge of such activities. The other one-third had various knowledge on ICPD activities involving young people. These include:

- Local and national youth NGOs initiatives including involvement in the development process of an adolescent reproductive health and development policy; and empowerment of young people
- The Youth Coalition’s involvement in the last ICPD review in 2004 in which regional youth trainings were organized in collaboration with partner organizations prior to the regional ICPD review meetings
- CHOICE which was originally initiated as a World Population Foundation project around ICPD and much later became an independent organization
- Youth parliament activities

One respondent asked UNFPA about information on national structures and initiatives on ICPD.

4) Have you been involved in the monitoring and evaluation of specific ICPD projects? Do you know of other young people who have?

To this question basically everyone responded negative except one respondent who talked about a government consortium called the National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development.

Cheers,
Thomas
