The world's third highest capital, Addis Ababa, plays host to Africa's biggest road race on November 23, 2008. Join ORBIS Ireland for the Great Ethiopian Run on the roof of Africa and help eliminate blinding trachoma.
Beginning in Meskel Square in downtown Addis Ababa, you'll be joined by 30,000 other competitors. The run is a challenging 10km run at 10,000 feet above sea level - an altitude that will test your physical condition. Along with some of the world's most renowned athletes, a huge variety of runners -- of all ranges -- are taking part.
There's a wonderful atmosphere as hundreds of thousands of spectators line the streets for the event and many millions more watch the event live on television.
The Journey
Thursday 20 November: Fly from Dublin to Addis Ababa. Check into Hilton Hotel. Rest and acclimatise.
Friday 21 November: Welcoming reception. Visit ORBIS sponsored pediatric units. Explore Addis Ababa. Optional training runs.
Saturday 22 November: Guided exploration of Addis Ababa. Meet with running legend and holder of 25 world records Haile Gebrselassie.
Sunday 23 November: GREAT ETHIOPIAN RUN starts at 9am!
Monday 24 November: Return flight to Dublin after day of exploring Addis Ababa.
Why ORBIS Ireland?
By joining ORBIS Ireland on the Great Ethiopian Run, you will:
Cure half a million children from active trachoma infection
Help save the sight of 60,000 people
Prevent 36,000 people from developing trachoma
ORBIS Ireland's goal is to eliminate blinding trachoma and restore sight to rural villagers in the Gamo Gofa, Konso and Derashe regions of Ethiopia by the end of 2012. In these remote parts of Ethiopia, primary eye care is almost non-existent. Trachoma is a common disease in these areas, which starts in childhood. If left untreated, this slowly progressive and painful disease robs its victims of their sight over the course of many years.
Join ORBIS on the Great Ethiopian Run and give the precious gift of sight.
How to participate
With the support of the ORBIS fundraising team, you'll be asked to raise a minimum of €3,500. We have some great suggestions to help you achieve your fundraising goal, and we will be with you every step of the way.
As an ORBIS team member, you will receive hotel accommodation, event travel and entry into the event. If you feel you might be up for the challenge, contact Sara Dale on 01 299 3530 or email sara.dale@ie.orbis.org.
