Accountability for the Human Rights of Niger Delta: Education, Re-orientation, Research and Empowerment project to Address Restiveness of the Neglected People of oil rich Niger Delta region.

Dear Colleagues,

Please be informed that Youth for Transparency International formerly African Youths for Transparency in collaboration with Women and Girl Child Initiative Network formerly Women and Girl Child Initiative Foundation the 2008 Civicus Nelson Mandela Graca Machel Innovation awards winners, invites application from women and youth organizations working in the Niger Delta to the 3 days workshop on Accountability for the human Rights of the Niger Delta.

The resources in the Niger delta have aggravated so much conflict and struggles in the area as they fight to preserve their environment and participate in the management of the resources the area has been endowed with against the human right abuse. In recent times the youths have become more vocal which has led to almost a complete breakdown of relationship between the Law, elders and the youths. Violence and human right abuse has also increased.

This unrest has cut a fifth of oil output from Nigeria , the world's eighth-biggest exporter, helping push global oil prices to record highs with insecurity the talk of the day.

Therefore this workshop seeks to constructively engage, educate and train 25 youth and women leaders in the Niger Delta region, practical and theoretical skills to promote accountability and the rights of the citizen. Implement successful interventions that can heal the wounds of growing resources and social conflicts in Niger Delta today and foster a conscious national network of NGO/CBO's working together to lend a voice to alleviate suffering of the Niger Delta people.


Selected participants will include Women and Youths leaders representing active NGOs/CBOs and Civil Society Organization from the Niger Delta Region.

Faculty for the training will include renowned Academics and experts in peace and non-violent education;

Participation slots are extremely limited therefore selection will be strictly based on information turned in by applicants. We invite interested participants to simply turn in responses to the following questions not later than October 5th 2008, only selected participants will be contacted.
