Climate change conference (free admission, no registration required)
Climate Catastrophe and Social Justice: Analysis & Action
Sponsored by Science for Peace, University of Toronto Students' Union, Graduate Students' Union and UTERN.
Date and time: Saturday October 4th 2008, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Location: Earth Science Centre Auditorium, Room 1050. 22 Russell St. Easiest entrace is off Bancroft Avenue
Themes: water justice, agro-business & food, environment and health, social justice and environmental racism, transforming universities, energy issues (renewables, oil sands, nuclear, conservation, etc), climate camp and youth-driven sustainable solutions.
Keynote speaker: John McMurtry, author of Value Wars: The Global Market Versus the Life Economy. McMurtry 'may be the single most influential Canadian voice in the anti-globalization movement.' (Wikipedia)
The conference consists of speakers and workshops. Speakers include:
* Prof. Danny Harvey, climate scientist and member of the IPCC, on the science of climate change, and necessary solutions
* Prof. Doug MacDonald, Centre for Environment - in-depth analysis on the failure of Canadian environmental policy, and solutions
* Prof. Paul Hamel (Science for Peace) on militarization, violence and poverty
* Prof. John Valleau (Science for Peace) on the increasing corporatization of universities, and opportunities for positive change
* Prof. Leslie Jermyn, on social justice and the necessity and possibility of deep structural change
* Prof. Dorothy Goldin-Rosenberg, producer of Toxic Trespass, on women's health, nuclear energy and toxicity
* Greenpeace, on the tar sands and nuclear energy
* Ben Powless, on climate racism and indigenous issues
* Ecojustice, on environmental law reform
* Council of Canadians, on water justice
Theatre / entertainment, free food and a resource kit will be provided.
