DetailsAbout
The eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been described by senior United Nations officials as the worst place in the world for women. “Terrible, unspeakable things are being done to women in the Congo. They live in fear of being violated, tortured, mutilated, and infected with HIV” says Stephen Lewis, Chair of the The Stephen Lewis Foundation and former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Despite such atrocity, local success stories are emerging. Join Stephen Lewis and Dr Denis Mukwege, founder and Director of the Panzi Hospital of Bukavu, DRC, as they discuss sexual violence in the DRC and how the Panzi Hospital – which specializes in the obstetric and gynecological consequences of sexual violence and has treated some 15,000 women and girls since 1999 – has become a refuge for the female survivors of war.

Since 2005, SAFER (Social Aid for the Elimination of Rape) has purchased and shipped $40,000 worth of crucial medical supplies to Panzi Hospital. And since November 2007, the Stephen Lewis Foundation has provided $650,000 to the DRC to help the Panzi Hospital establish an extensive HIV/AIDS testing and treatment programme and develop psychosocial support services for the staff and patients who live each day in the face of extreme trauma and suffering.
