Invited speakers: Ulises Garcia, a Toronto-based Peruvian activist

This public lecture will be presented in English and French. The documentary film "Tambogrande" (60 min) will be presented in English with French subtitles in order to facilitate the discussion.
Shortly after 1492, Latin America became a magnet for large-scale mining operations. Peru, a key mining nation since colonial times, which also included the lands known today as Bolivia, saw the extraction of vast mineral resources which shaped a new world order that remains largely in place. Little of the enormous wealth extracted from these lands was reinvested in the region.

Contemporary large-scale mining projects often conflict with communities' interests living on lands dedicated to food production for local consumption and/or for the purposes of exportation. In other cases, there is also the issue concerning exploitation of the traditional lands of Indigenous peoples.

Is mining the way to go to generate sustainable jobs and reduce poverty in Latin America as mining companies and governments proclaim? Does mining bring true benefits to communities? If so, at what cost? Are communities being consulted on their desire to allow large mining operations within their lands? What can communities who do not agree with a large mining venture do about it? This panel invites you to debate these and other important related topics.

This public lecture is free and open to the public.
