Global Action Week -- Canadian Update - April 21, 2009 - Posted By: Dwayne Hodgson

• The registration total for GAW currently sits at 526 teachers and activists who have expressed their interest in holding a BIG READ activity in Canada.

• MP Mike Savage (Cole Harbour – Dartmouth) made a statement in the House of Commons yesterday re: EFA. You can now find it in the Hansard @ http://www2.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Language=E&Mode=1&Parl=40&Ses=2&DocId=3810635#Int-2700422 (English) and http://www2.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?Mode=1&Parl=40&Ses=2&DocId=3810635&Language=F#Int-2700422 (French).

• The Canadian Teachers’ Federation held a marvellous Parliamentary Breakfast this morning in the House of Commons Restaurant. Amidst the marbled columns and domed ceilings, we watched a multi-media presentation of Frank Edwards’ BIG READ story, Deleted, in French, English, Cree and Inuktitut, met the author himself, and heard CIDA basically echo all of our policy asks in a statement. There were more than 40 MPs and Senators in attendance, (including a few like Justin Trudeau who came without having RSVP’ed). Thanks to Barbara McDonald Moore and all of her CTF colleagues who put together a fabulous program that obviously is gaining traction.

• The Make Poverty History online action is still active. I am awaiting current stats for how many people have signed on, but you can still add your name to it by visiting http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca/en/email/archive/039education-most-powerful-weapon-change-world039 (English) & http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca/fr/email/archive/quotl%E2%80%99%C3%A9ducation-est-l%E2%80%99outil-le-plus-puissant-qui-puisse-%C3%AAtre-utilis%C3%A9-pour-changer-le-m (French). I’m pleased that we’re getting the word about GAW, EFA and CGCE out to a whole new audience, and that their responses are going directly into the inboxes of MPs and the Minister. Please continue to circulate this amongst your networks. This is a really easy action for people to do.

Global Action Week: Calling All Authors! - Posted By: Dwayne Hodgson

Every year, GCE and its affiliates hold Global Action Week (GAW). This past spring (2008), 8.8 million students took part in the Worlds Biggest Classroom and set a Guinness Record for the largest simultaneous class.

This year, GAW will be held from April 20-26, 2009, and we'll be focusing on youth and adult literacy by undertaking an action called the BIG READ in classrooms and public spaces across Canada (and the world!). GCE is compiling a book of reflections on literacy by some well-known authors like Nelson Mandela, Queen Rania of Jordan, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Paulo Coelho, Alice Walker, Devli Kumari, and Dakota Blue Richards (Golden Compass).

We are now looking for Canadian authors who can write a short piece on literacy issues (non-fiction or fiction) that can be added to a global compilation of work by authors like Nelson Mandela, Queen Rania of Jordan, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Paulo Coelho, Alice Walker, Devli Kumari, and Dakota Blue Richards (Golden Compass).

If you are interested, please drop me a note at dhodgson@cgce.ca or via TIG.

NB: If you are an author in another country who'd like to contribute, please visit the GCE website to find your local country affiliate @www.campaignforeducation.org
