OUR PROJECTS
We are in the process of inviting international youth volunteers and incorporating as many local youth serving organizations as possible to join us in celebrations of this day and offer services to their communities.
In Kenya young people are recruited and trained annually in the National Youth Service (NYS). As a large component in the youth in service, we would like to incorporate them in the service countrywide and also work closely with any youthful organization that has structures to the grass root level.
We invite the Ministry of Youth Affairs to work with us in disseminating the information of this day to the grass root level using their country-wide network and pick a project in the below groups to serve the communities around them:
1. YOUTHS IN SERVICE
a) Youths as professionals
The majority of successful professional in Kenya are young people. While most of them are successful or aspiring to become successful and wealthy. Most of them are dedicated in ensuring they succeed and become the best in their field. For us young people to succeed and give back to our communities on this day we are in the process of recruiting different professionals to volunteer their services to different communities
i. Youths as lawyers
Most people in different communities have issues that need advice; this can either be issues that can be resolved immediately or issues that need legal advice or assistance. It is for that reason that we call all young lawyers to come together to offer their services in these days. They can do this by both setting up tents and attending to the different cases on a one-to-one basis.
ii. Youths as Doctors
There is no single day you will go to any community and not find a sick person. But there are many instances where you will find sick people in their houses reason being they have no money to spend on medication. Also on the other hand while many physicians encourage people to go for regular check ups in different areas not so many people can afford this. This will give our good doctors an opportunity to save a life and bring back a smile to the community. In this we require doctors in different field’s i. e dentists, general doctors, gynecologists etc
iii. Youths as journalists/Media personalities
Young people in Media have ended up being awarded for airing best innovative stories. They have also been credited for airing/writing inflammatory talks/ pieces that had a negative impact of the population. We would like to work with the seasoned youthful journalists in both print, air and internet media to help people understand the powerful role journalists plays on the issues of the day to day living and also showcase the activities of GYSD.
iv. Youths in entrepreneurship
Youths in entrepreneurship
Youths in investment funding/ Venture capitalists
Youths in Employment
We aim to have the above groups to come together in their areas of expertise to help advice and encourage each other. This exercise will then help promote open channels of communication and therefore increased opportunities
v. Youths as peace builders and counselors
The violence is often channeled through the youth as witnessed in the past demonstrations both in recent times and before. We hope to use the current peace ambassadors who came out strongly after the post election violence to advocate for peace and they will remain active to date. We shall sue their resilience to help educate the participants and also enable them (the peace ambassador) to be rejuvenated through interaction, encouragement and participation and recruit more peace ambassadors
2. Youth in the communities Activities
As the world celebrates Earth Day On 22nd April 2008, we intend to incorporate this day in the celebration of GYSD by engaging in a semester of environmental projects by offering services to our communities.
I. Tree planting
We would like to engage the services of other young people to improve our environment and make it a safe haven for our future and the generations to come. We will identify areas in regions that were badly affected by the post election violence and plant trees to signify new life and beginning for young people and Kenyans at large
II. Clean up Exercises
Knowing how our slums are there is a lot of work to be done in terms of making the community a better place to leave in. We are in the process of mobilizing young people in different youth groups to come help us clean our slums and remove garbage and make our slums a better place to live.
