| Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch will be speaking about the north/south divide in the types of human rights that are emphasized internationally. He will be looking at the common conception of civil and political rights (right to vote, free speech) as being a fundamentally western phenomenon while economic and social right (right to food, education, work) as belonging to the developing world. Roth will also discuss how in such a conception of human rights, economic and social rights have become considered by some to be second class rights. |
