Despite the long tradition of women migrating within countries and internationally for work, this explicit focus is relatively new in migration discourse. For much of the twentieth century, researchers and policy analysts alike saw the migration of women as derivative from that of men. Women were assumed to migrate in response to the previous settlement of men, for purposes of marriage or family reunion. Their economic characteristics, contributions, and labor market experiences were given little attention. This
gender stereotypical approach is now being replaced by the growing recognition that migrant women are active economic participants. Still, the international labour market is highly gendered, and women are not only restricted in the type of work that they find, but they are particularly vulnerable to various forms of discrimination, exploitation, and abuse. Furthermore
because they are ‘alien’ to the country that they find employment in, both the government and some union groups alike are often unwilling to work with them to improve their living situations.
No One is Illegal is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion featuring independent researcher Salimah Valiani, Aimee Beboso of Philippine Migrant Society of Canada (PMSC), and other speakers. The panel contributors will speak from their experiences in working and supporting migrant women workers in Ottawa, as well as examining Canadian policy and regulations that affect the lives of migrant workers in Ottawa. |
