DetailsAbout
This event will be in partnership with the Jefferson Awards Youth Service Initiative (www.jeffersonawards.org) and the Building with Books Club (www.buildOn.org). The student leaders will organize a dance-athon with a global focus. Freshmen and Sophomores will be asked to find sponsorship for their entry into the "Dance-Athon" with the object of being the last couple standing after 3 1/2 hours of dancing, with their fellow peers cheering them on! Working with the “Building for Books” Club which seeks to educate and empower students all across the world, the Jefferson Awards Student Leaders at Curie wish to educate their fellow peers and community on health issues affecting developing countries, especially Africa and Nicaragua; how technology, medicine, science, education, money and culture affect health in different countries and cultures. Throughout the semester, the students will focus via a series of informational multimedia presentations on how, for example, common but very treatable diseases plague developing countries and what students at Curie can do about it. By fostering awareness of global concerns, the students also hope to engage others in thinking about the quality of their own personal health and that in their community. The students at Curie also understand that dancing is an activity which is motivating and enjoyable to many young people and seek to convey the health benefits of exercise. Dancing is universal; you do not need to speak someone’s language to understand dance. The event will be highly promoted within the school and will be recorded by the Curie TV Studio to be sued during Freshman Orientation to promote leadership and service.
