This event is part of a another event, Global Youth Service Day 2009
THE YOUTH: RECLAIMING KENYA’S FUTURE BY ATTAINING MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGS) THROUGH SERVICE
Project concept framework to mark the Global youth Service day international celebration 2009 in Kenya.
INTRODUCTION
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the least celebrated international event in Kenya, in this view Kenya Slum Youths Development Organization (KESYDO) has invited volunteers from different organizations country wide, to come and celebrate with us and share with us their side of the story on how they have been able to make this event an important celebration in their local areas. KESYDO through this event will advocate and campaign for the recognition of youth service to the country’s development towards attaining the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The eight MDGs are:
1) Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2) Achieve Universal primary Education
3) Promote gender equality and empower women
4) Reduce child Mortality
5) Improve maternal health
6) Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7) Ensure environmental sustainability
8) Develop a global partnership for development.
KESYDO also ensures that there is involvement of youths in both national and international policy making, planning and implementation. Therefore we invite you all both local and international volunteers, to come in large numbers to this event in recognition of the youth’s contribution in achieving the millennium Development goals (MDGs) before 2015, and make this celebration a success, and create anew chapter of youth service in Kenya. Don’t miss this great event, it will change your life and focus and you will never be the same again.
GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY (GYSD)
Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual celebration of young volunteers, where millions of young people in countries everywhere highlight and carry out thousands of community improvement projects. Global Youth Service Day is a celebration of the service young people do every day. Millions of young people, contrary to many stereotypes, are responsibly serving their communities year-round and telling the world about it on one specific day. The Goals of Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is to offer a way for local, national, and international organizations to:
• BUILD the capacity of an international network of organizations that promotes youth participation, service, and learning;
• EDUCATE the public, the media, and policy-makers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders around the world;
• MOBILIZE youth and adults to meet the needs of their communities through volunteering; and
• LEARN and share effective practices in youth service, youth voice, and civic engagement in the world today.
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is an annual global event organized by Youth Service America (YSA) and the Global Youth Action Network (GYAN), together with numerous International Organizations and National Coordinating Committees that Celebrates, Recognizes, and Mobilizes
• The year-round contributions of young people to build their communities and their world through voluntary service, and
• The contributions made by the community (public, private, and nonprofit sectors) for empowering young people, especially through mentoring.
KESYDO AS THE NATIONAL LEAD AGENCY FOR THE GYSD PROJECT
KESYDO a National Lead Agency (NLA) in Kenya for the celebration of the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) in April, 2008, has gone a level higher and is now organizing International celebrations of GYSD 2009 which will be held in April 24-26, 2009 at Nairobi’s informal settlements in Kenya, East Africa!
KESYDO youth – in partnership with ministry of youth affairs and sports, several community organization, government parastatals, faith-based groups, and young professionals in different areas – will lead activities that improve their communities. Projects will range from literacy on disaster management and relief, environment to health care, nutrition, and voluntary work in different areas in serving people around us. Kenyan youths will be introduced to volunteering on GYSD, and will be inspired by visiting international volunteers to begin a lifetime of service and service-learning. Other youths will be recognized for their year round contributions. Finally, we will also take the opportunity to help youths launch new organizations, policy changes, and sustainable service programs to create a culture of engaged youths. Above all the celebrations will be blended by a visit to Nairobi National park where guests will have a test of Kenya’s beautiful wildlife, both fauna and flora, and host their exchange programme within the same scenery.
As a result KESYDO has come up with Project titled: “Reclaiming Kenya’s future by attaining Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through service” with the motto “Utumishi wetu, Ushindi wetu” to assist youths in planning and promoting their activities during and after GYSD. We therefore as KESYDO ask all youthful organizations and other organizers to post their events on our website www.kesydo.org and GYSD website www.gysd.org
WHY THE PROJECT “RECLAIMING KENYA’S FUTURE BY ATTAINING MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs) THROUGH SERVICE”
1. Reconstruction and reconciliation for peace
The young people in Kenya are the ones who have the biggest stake in a united, peaceful, just and prosperous future in Kenya. There is a big gap that no one is filling- the gap of dialogue and reconciliation and TO builds a common vision for Kenya that is not inspired by partisan agenda. The Youth are the ones who provide the fire for tearing the communities apart, yet they are the ones who have the gift and energies to reconcile the communities and forge ahead to achieve MDGs before 2015. That is if they are accorded the opportunity to dialogue on the shared destiny and future. This opportunity for dialogue in this international platform from young people of diverse cultures is the duty to stand in the gap.
2. Build broad based community support and international youth exchange programme.
Global Youth Service Day 2009 international celebrations is an opportunity for the entire world to come together for a common cause. Bringing together private, public and international organizations to provide access to an unlimited amount of resources and create ongoing partnerships with young people and youth exchange programmes
3. Increase community’s capacity to support young people in attaining MDGs
Project VT is intended to inspire and build upon the idea that youth are current assets of a community. There is need to improve relationships, initiate events, and learning activities that will increase the community’s ability to support youth leadership throughout the world.
4. Increase ethnic cohesion amongst the Kenyan communities
As a result of the post election violence there is need for young people to come together and condemn violence amongst other youth. Project VT seeks out diverse community members to help define diversity in our communities – every community is different and definitions vary.
This will help to overlook the differences in race, ethnicity, political affiliations, religious beliefs, gender, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, age, education, and physical ability, and give a new focus on attaining MDGs before 2015.
5. Create service-learning opportunities on MDGs
Community groups and international volunteers will use these days of service learning as a powerful vehicle to improve personal or communal achievements and development. This will be achieved by building in learning opportunities through all the stages of the process: preparation, action, reflection, and celebration.
6. Engage media and government officials in believing in investing positively in youthful issues
The best way to build support for youth and service within these two critical groups is to let members of the media and government officials see great projects for themselves.
Quality service exposes volunteers to pressing community needs. After the GYSD project is complete, there will be need to help youth learn about and address the causes of community problems through advocacy and civic engagement. We intend to maximize youth’s impact to combine service and civic engagements in achieving MDGs.
OUR GOALS
• To encourage more youths to participate in eradication of poverty and hunger, and ensure environmental sustainability through service
• To celebrate the attainment of universal primary education through free primary education by our Government.
• To encourage the youths to promote gender equality and women empowerment
• To forge new community partnerships to attain MDGs
• To develop youth leadership in the community and youth exchange program through ICT.
• To encourage our government to increase efforts in reducing child mortality and improve maternal health through the available facilities.
• To educate youth on how to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
• To address the problem of ethnicity, drug abuse, violence and discrimination.
• To learn more about the way of life of other international communities.
OUR PROJECTS
We are in the process of inviting international youth volunteers and incorporating as many local youth serving organizations as possible to join us in celebrations of this day and offer services to their communities. In Kenya young people are recruited and trained annually in the National Youth Service (NYS). As a large component in the youth in service we would like to incorporate them in the service countrywide and also work closely with any youthful organization that has structures to the grass root level. We invite the Ministry of Youth Affairs to work with us in disseminating the information of this day to the grass root level using their country wide network and pick a project in the below groups to serve the communities around them. The events of the celebration will focus mainly on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), under each activity/Service, millennium goals which it will achieve has been mentioned with abbreviation e.g. G-1, stands for MDG 1.
1. YOUTHS IN SERVICE
a) Youths as professionals
The majority of successful professional in Kenya are young people. While most of them are successful or aspiring to become successful and wealthy. Most of them are dedicated in ensuring they succeed and become the best in their field. For us young people to succeed and give back to our communities on this day, we are in the process of recruiting different professionals to volunteer their services to different communities in view of advocating and campaigning for attainment of 8MDGs before 2015.
i. Youths as lawyers
Most people in different communities have issues that need advice; this can either be issues that can be resolved immediately or issues that need legal advice or assistance. It is for that reason that we call all young lawyers to come together to offer their services in these days. They can do this by both setting up tents and attending to the different cases on a one- one basis.
ii. Youths as Doctors (Medical Camps)
G-4. Reduce child mortality G-5. Improve maternal health
G-6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
There is no single day you will go to any community and not find a sick person. But there are many instances where you will find sick people in their houses reason being they have no money to spend on medication. Also on the other hand while many physicians encourage people to go for regular check ups in different areas not so many people can afford this. On 25th April 2009 we will have medical camps in the 4 decided locations in slums, where patients will receive free consultations on the named above MDGs, be tested on malaria and given drugs and also VCT services will also be available .This will give our good doctors an opportunity to save a life and bring back a smile to the community. In this we require doctors in different field’s e.g. pediatricians, dentists, general doctors, gynecologists, lab technologists, pharmacists, Nutritionists etc.
iii. Youths as journalists/Media personalities
(To promote youth participation towards achieving MDGs before 2015)
Young people in Media have ended up being awarded for airing best innovative stories. They have also been credited for airing/writing inflammatory talks/ pieces that had a negative impact of the population. We would like to work with the seasoned youthful journalists in both print, air and internet media to help people understand the powerful role journalists plays on the issues of the day to day living and also show case the activities of GYSD
iv. Youths in entrepreneurship
G-1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger G-2. Promote gender equality and empower women G-8. Develop a global partnership for development
Youths in entrepreneurship/ Young women in enterprise
Youths in investment funding/ Venture capitalists, business incubation.
Youths in Employment
We aim to have the above groups to come together in their areas of expertise to help advice and encourage each other. This exercise will then help promote open channels of communication and therefore increased opportunities for youth empowerment and mentorship towards sustainable livelihood, development and as a source of employment.
v. Youths as peace builders and counselors
(Supportive to all MDGs:- “no peace, no focus on MDGs”)
The violence is often channeled through the youth as witnessed in the past demonstrations both in recent times and before. We hope to use the current peace ambassadors who came out strongly after the post election violence to advocate for peace in order to keep focus on attaining the 8 MDGs. We shall sue their resilience to help educate the participants and also enable them (the peace ambassador) to be rejuvenated through interaction, encouragement and participation and recruit more peace ambassadors
2. Youth in the communities Activities
As the world celebrates Earth Day On 22nd April 2009, we intend to incorporate this day in the celebration of GYSD by engaging in a semester of environmental projects by offering services to our communities.
I. Tree planting
G-7. Ensure environmental sustainability
G-8. Develop a global partnership for development
We would like to engage the services of other young people to improve our environment and make it a safe haven for our future and the generations to come. We will identify areas in regions that require were badly affected by the post election violence and plant trees to signify new life and beginning for young people and Kenyans at large
II. Clean up Exercises
G-7. Ensure environmental sustainability
G-8. Develop a global partnership for development
Knowing how our slums are there is a lot of work to be done in terms of making the community a better place to leave in. We are in the process of mobilizing young people in different youth groups to come help us clean our slums and remove garbage and make our slums a better place to live into come
OUR PLANNING STRUCTURE
1. KESYDO COMMITTEE
As KESYDO we have already put in place an in house committee comprising of youths who serve in the different capacity in our organization in our programs. These volunteer program coordinators have been assisting in coming up with the different projects, creating awareness of the event and engaging different communities in order to understand and know what are their areas of need.
