Youth Academy: Leadership for Democracy and Development - Posted By: Emeka Diru
Text of a Statement Delivered at the June 30 Press Conference by the Ken Nnamani Centre for Leadership and Development (KNCLD) to launch its Youth Academy at the Centre’s Office in Abuja
This Saturday, the fourth of July, the Ken Nnamani Center for Leadership and Development will inaugurate the first session of its Youth Academy. The Academy, which will run for eight consecutive weeks, will be a Saturday program. We are limiting the program to Saturdays in order to give opportunity to students and those who hold regular jobs to attend the Academy.
We have invited the Minister of Youth and Social Development to declare the Academy open . The Academy will be a mixture of formal instruction and practical exercises on issues ranging from citizenship, electoral reform governance, and economic growth and development. The Centre has distinguished civil society leaders, development practitioners and public officials who have offered their time and resources to counsel and share experiences that can inspire these youths to creativity, innovation and transformative action. Senator Joy Emodi, Chair, Senate Committee on Education; Professor Julius Ihonvbere President Obasanjo’s policy adviser and Dr. Osita Ogbu, former Economic Adviser to the President, have accepted to be panelists for a discussion on leadership for the Academy’s opening day. During the course of the eight weeks, representatives of the World Bank, the UNDP and the DFID and accomplished private sector innovators will also instruct Academy’s participants in their various fields of expertise.
The Youth Academy is launched as part of the mission of the Ken Nnamani Center to promote economic prosperity, democratic governance and political stability in Nigeria. The Youth Academy is conceived as a special facility for the training of young people to become leaders who can transform their society.
The Centre’s focus on engendering transformative leadership through research, training and advocacy underlines the recognition that transformative leadership is one critical ingredient missing in our quest for economic and political development. We recognize that without transformative leadership, Nigeria will not achieve its national development priorities. The problem of leadership cannot be left solely for elected officials. Civic responsibility is an essential component of national leadership.
In keeping with our Centre’s belief in the capacity of young people to play importance roles in economic and social development through creative thought, critical analysis and effective action, the Centre will, in the near future, embark on a series of interventions, in addition to the Academy, on youth leadership development, including mentoring and training. These interventions will aim at enhancing the life-skills and leadership capabilities of Nigerian youth in order to make them good citizens and transformative leaders today so they can better manage the challenges of tomorrow.

Never Say
Never say to your teacher,
"I know more than you do"
Never say to your parent,
"I can do without you"
Never say to your friend,
"Who says you're special?"
Never say to your cousin,
"My father is richer than yours"
Never say to a stranger,
My house is the red one down the street"
Never say to your maidservant,
"...That's why you're poor"
Never say in public,
"My parents snore like pigs"
Never say in private,
"No one would see me if i take out of it"
Never say to God,
"You're so unkind"
And never to yourself,
"I just can't pass it!"
Say These
Say this often,
"Thank you so much"
Say this humbly,
"Can i sit down?"
Say this sincerely,
"I'm so sorry"
Say this kindly,
"This is what i can give"
Say this politely,
"No, we can't be friends!"
Say this seriously,
"I don't do that!"
Say this zealously,
"Let's still be hopeful"
Say this confidently,
"I love my parents"
Say this sternly,
"Don't let's gossip!"
And say this often,
"Nigeria will keep getting better"
