Multiple award-winning film Teza, along with its director Haile Gerima, is coming back to Toronto!

The Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT) has arranged a screening of Teza at the Royal Theatre in downtown Toronto on Thursday, June 25

Directed by award-winning director Haile Gerima, Teza is set in Ethiopia and Germany during Mengistu Haile Mariam's 1974-91 rule. The movie tells the story of a young medical research scientist from Ethiopia who returns home after training in Germany to find a bloodletting authoritarian regime in place of the land of liberty and development of which he dreamed. Teza covers the issues of dictatorship, emigration, torture, war, and the position of women in Ethiopian society during the period.

This masterpiece took 14 years of making. Gerima not only directed the film but also researched it, wrote it, spent years raising money for it, edited it, composed the soundtrack, and auditioned every actor.

The event will be held in occasion of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of human rights issues and to stand in support of survivors living in our own communities and throughout the world. The door opens at 6:15 p.m. and there will be an intimate post-screening discussion with the director Haile Gerima.

Teza has won numerous awards including: OSELLA for Best Screenplay, Special Jury Prize and Signis Award (special mention) at the 65th Venice Film Festival, Dioraphte Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, CinemAvvenire Award, the Cinema for Peace and the Richness of Diversity Award and the UNICEF Award. Most recently, Teza won an African Oscars, the Golden Stallion of Yennenga, at the Fespaco film festival in Burkina Faso. Teza was the unanimous choice for this year’s top award.
