On October 24, 2009, the Orange County Interfaith Coalition for the Environment (OCICE) will participate in the “International Day of Climate Action,” along with over 1000 other organizations, organizing events around the world.
The International Day of Climate Action is a call to the world’s political leaders to reduce carbon in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, the acceptable “safe” level scientists say will keep us from suffering the worst ravages of global climate change. We need an international agreement to reduce carbon emissions quickly and 2009 is shaping up to offer the best opportunity for real change.
The United Nations is working on a global climate treaty, slated for completion in December of 2009, at a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. The current plans for the treaty are much too weak to get us back to safety. This treaty needs to put a high enough price on carbon that we stop using so much. It also needs to ensure poor countries a fair chance to develop.
We can hold our decision-makers accountable to produce a treaty that is strong, equitable, and grounded in the latest science. On October 24, 2009, OCICE is taking part in the “International Day of Climate Action” by hosting our own event here in Orange County. This grassroots movement will be connected by the web and active all over the world.
OCICE is one of the few organizations in Southern California whose purpose is to educate and enlist the involvement of all faith communities in the care of our earth and its inhabitants.
For the climate and for humankind, this is the moment of decision. If this global movement succeeds, we can get the world on track to get back to 350 ppm and back to climate safety.
