Introduction
The United Nations General Assembly on 17 December 1999 in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond, adopted by the General Assembly in 1995 (resolution 50/81).
To commemorate the United Nations International Youth Day 2009, Global Youth Alliance and Youth Service Switzarland are organizing a special 5-Day Capacity Building Workshop for Youth Leaders with the theme ‘Character Development, Community Service, Conflicts Resolution and Peacebuilding’.
Objective
The Workshop is being convened to:
1. Install in the youth a sense of a future filled with hope. We are mobilizing Youth Leaders and inspiring them through our educational programs to respond to the challenges facing our nations and world today including youth restiveness, increasing wave of crime, drug abuse, cultism, spread of HIV/AIDS and other anti-social behaviours among young people, inter-communal/religious crises, and the threat to unity & integration.
2. Mobilize, educate, commission and add to the network of young leaders representing the religious, racial and ethnic diversity of our nations and world, as well as other human endeavour, who stand on the common ground of shared principles and are committed to the path of promoting reconciliation, overcoming barriers, and building lasting peace.
3. Raise a new generation of young leaders that will serve as peer educators to reduce youth restiveness, crimes and other anti-social behaviours as well as encourage youth involvement in community service.
Participation Policies
In order for everyone to have a successful workshop, we have established certain camp polices and guidelines which are listed below:
1. Workshop Fees
Participation attracts a subsidized fee of Two Hundred US Dollars ($200) only per participant which covers:
i) Feeding (breakfast, lunch and dinner)5 days
ii) Hostel accommodation
iii) Printed course materials
Full payment of workshop fees is compulsory for any participant to be accepted into the camp.
2. Workshop Location/Date
Irchel campus of the University of Zurich
3. Structure of the Workshop
Every participant will be placed on a four or more-person team for the duration of the workshop. There will be team sports, team duties and chores, and most days there will be time for team meetings. Three (or more) teams together will form one group, each of which will be headed by a Group Leader who is responsible for the teams. Finally, the Workshop Director is responsible for the group leaders. Group and Team leaders will have daily meetings during breakfast. Finally, several workshop staff will be assisting throughout the workshop. Of course we want to show them at all times our respect and courtesy.
4. Workshop Policies
a)Full participation in all scheduled events is expected and required.
b)Every participant should expect to regularly perform small chores, team duties and other voluntary tasks in order to assure smooth running of the workshop.
c)Alcohol, tobacco and drug use are strictly forbidden, as well as any inappropriate intimate relationships with the opposite sex.
d) Participants must respect posted announcements and safety regulations and act at all times with restraint and respect to avoid personal injury or property damage.
e)No one should leave workshop site without permission from group leaders.
f)Telephone calls should be restricted during public activity time (lecture, sports and evening program time etc.) except for emergencies.
5.Due Process
Roll calls are made daily at 4.50AM and other inspections will be made from time to time. The checkpoints will include:
·Attendance at Inter-Faith Morning Gathering for Reading & Learning and Lecture sessions.
· Completion of team duties and chores
·Participation in Lectures, Sports and Training Activities, including Service Projects
·Examinations on the Lecture Contents and Competence in Teaching the Lecture Contents
·Unity with team members and active, positive participation in all team meetings
·Order and tidiness of bedrooms and personal items.
6. Certificate of Graduation
Trainees who successfully fulfill all the requirements of the program will receive a Certificate of Graduation at the end of the Training Workshop. This is an important document, attesting to the qualification of a person for appointment to leadership positions.
7. What to bring
In order to have a successful workshop experience it is important to bring the right materials for your stay. The following is a general guide to help you.
Practical Equipment: bring everything you need.
· Notebook, journal, pens, and stationery
· Flashlight and night reading light
· Biodegradable body soap, shampoo and laundry soaps
· Towel and facecloth, sheets and blankets
· Make-up, shaving kits, toothbrush, personal items
Clothing
We will be doing sports and outdoor activities. Be sure to bring the following:
· An extra pair of outdoor shoes for general use, comfortable shoes or slippers for indoor use
· Underwears, Sportswears
· Bring your best clothes for the graduation ceremony at the end of the workshop. Otherwise, casual, comfortable clothing is best.
Medicine/Health:
·Whilst it is unlikely that you may contract any serious disease, it is very possible that you may get a cold, flu, fever, diarrhea and upset stomach or a combination of these. You are therefore advised to be well prepared for this eventuality and bring plenty medication for pain relief, upset stomach, diarrhea, fever and common colds.
·Don’t forget to bring personal prescription medicine for your full period of stay (if you are currently taking some) as well as any vitamins or other supplements you may feel relevant.
