DetailsAbout
According to a joint press release issue by United Nations, the World AIDS campaign and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS, the World AIDS Day theme for 2009 is Universal Access & Human Rights. New Era seeks to bring together the youth community to explore the theme of access as a right, in the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Over the last year of mobilizing communities of color around the HIV/AIDS epidemic, it has become clear that there is a lack of resources and services the youth population can access. This becomes increasing more important as national healthcare legislation moves closer to finalization and a national HIV/AIDS strategy begins to take shape. Activist and prevention leaders continue to work with public health official to secure the resources available against budget cuts, amongst the current economic climate, but there is clearly need for high risk populations/communities to build grassroots responses to the current realities of the epidemic.

James Baldwin once warned: “A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him, and a child cannot afford to be fooled,” and this becomes all the more relevant when thought of in the context of HIV in our communities. As we’ve shared the message of the “Test 1 Million” campaign, we’ve come to learn more about the challenges and barriers youth are facing while accessing prevention/education and HIV testing services. This World AIDS Day we hope to continue to spread the “Test 1 Million” campaign while increasing youth access to HIV education and prevention. New Era, with youth groups/organizations, is hosting a youth centered week in observance of World AIDS Day 2009 under the share theme “Universal Access & Youth Rights.”
