DetailsAbout
It is well known that the 2007/2008 post election violence resulted in the displacement of large numbers of people across the country. It is estimated that 78,254 houses were burnt/destroyed and 663, 921 persons displaced. Of these internally displaced persons (IDPS) 350,000 settled in 118 refugee camps while 313,921 either returned to their homes of origin, settled in urban areas or found accommodation with their friends, relatives and well wishers.
To date many of the IDPs from the camps have either returned to their homes or resettled in other areas through initiative of the government or well wishers, while their security remains fragile (there are reports of returnees who were killed or displaced immediately upon return) another major challenge is providing shelter. This is particularly of great concern during the current rainy season where there is real threat of exposure to cold weather and related diseases like pneumonia and malaria; and waterborne disease like cholera and typhoid in addition to usual refugee camp challenges especially insecurity. It’s notable to mention that, there has emerged a new type of IDP’s following the Mau forest relocation plans.
Against this background, Shelter 2000 will be holding an event to raise funds for buying essential building materials to facilitate the resettlement of IDPs whether in the context of government or well wishers initiatives. We reckon that even if the government is giving some money for purchase of such materials, rebuilding a homestead requires a lot more than the amount amount the government usually gives (It has been reported that some IDPS have been given a paltry Kshs.10,000 ). The event, dubbed “Youth 2 Youth 4 Peace Operation Tuwajengee IDP’’ targets the involvement of the youth in order to cultivate their community and civic responsibility which hopefully will contribute positively to national reconciliation and peace building for a better Kenya.
It have been said that, it’s largely the youth who caused wide spread suffering, displacement and colossal loss of property after the 2007 election furor. This event (“Youth 2 Youth 4 Peace Operation Tuwajengee IDP”) will bring together youth from all walks and from different regions. At the end of the event, a Peace Consensus statement will be read by youth representatives from different regions, civil society and institutions. In this regard we are partnering with youth mainly from academic institutions including Nairobi University, Kenyatta University, JKUAT, Utalii College, Polytechnic, and Daystar University while still reaching out to other institutions, civil societies and co-corporate bodies.
Our objectives is to; promote Inter – ethnic, Inter political, Inter cultural, Inter religious harmony within the entire youth towards a peaceful and patriotic Kenyan society. To reflect on the role of Young people; in the ongoing process of reform, reconstruction, resettlement and reconciliation following the aftermath of 2007/2008 post election violence. We want to strategically forge a long term agenda to promote corporate social responsibility in the Youth of Kenya.
The event will be held on January 02, 2010 at Jevanjee Gardens- Nairobi from 10.a.m to 2 p.m. We target to raise Kshs 11,792,000.00 in cash or in-kind donations; with respect to building materials, transport to the resettlement areas, subsistence and accommodation and the fundraising event (kindly see the attached budget). Our aim is to raise 20,000 Iron Sheets to donate to the IDP’s. We will have trucks full or Iron Sheets in Jevanjee Gardens on the actual day of event, for easy purchasing for some participants. We are kindly requesting for your support in this event. Your attendance and participation will be very much appreciated. One week after the event, youth leaders from different regions will be selected to go and build ceremonial houses in some IDP areas. This act will symbolize a new dawn for peace and youth in our country of Kenya. We have identified two camps which will benefit from these donations/help.
The sponsors will have a chance to showcase their merchandise on the day of the event, form partnership with Shelter 2000 in advertising the event, form a long term working relationship with the youth in Kenya and promote the general welfare of our IDP’s as we get ready to enjoy the Christmas holiday.
Yours Sincerely,

Johnson Ngarari .M
