Victoria, British Columbia, has been selected as the venue for the fourth
UNEP International Children's Conference on the Environment which will take place from 22 to 24 May 2002. The Conference will be held at the
University of Victoria and is expected to bring together 800 children
(10 to 12 years old) from over 115 countries, providing them with an opportunity
to learn about and voice their concerns on the state of the environment as well as to showcase environmental initiatives by schools. The Conference is also expected to produce a statement from children to the world leaders who will meet in the summer of 2002 in Johannesburg for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. Among the issues the Conference will focus on
are: resource conservation, climate change and water. "I am very pleased
that Canada will host this important event",said David Anderson,
Minister of the Environment for Canada and current President of UNEP's
Governing Council. "There are natural links between a healthy environment and
healthy children. The various experiences, observations and ideas of the
children around the world really bring home to us their desire for concrete actions to address environmental issues in a tangible manner." ________________________________________________________________________
________
Background
The International Children's Conference on the Environment has been inspired
by the recognition that children need to be active participants in decisions
that affect the future of the planet. It is also a direct response to the
1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. There, Agenda 21, the blueprint for international
sustainable development, was adopted, including a call upon national
Governments to actively involve children and youth in the planning and
implementation of youth policies regarding the environment. The first
International Children's Conference on the Environment was held in 1995 in
Eastbourne, England. Since that time, conferences have been held in
Nairobi in 1998, and again in Eastbourne in 2000.
The 2002 conference in Victoria, organized in cooperation with the United
Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will be a four-day event. It will
bring together 800 children, aged 10-12 years, from over 115 countries, to
learn, share experiences, voice their concerns, and join a worldwide
environmental network to promote positive action. The children themselves
will be presenting their projects and leading the discussions, with the help
of adult facilitators.
Conference Themes and Objectives
Delegates will cover a wide variety of issues over four days. The
overall
conference theme is LOCAL CHANGE CAN MAKE GLOBAL CHANGE. Daily
conference
themes are:
Day One: Water: The Essence of Life and Survival
Day Two: Climate Change: Each of Us Can Make a Difference
Day Three: Resource Conservation: Reducing our impact on the
Environment
Day Four: Healthy Communities, Healthy Children
In addition, delegates will have the opportunity to discover the natural
beauty of British Columbia through excursions and field trips where they
will gain an appreciation for the fragility of nature and our shared
responsibility in protecting it.
The International Children's Conference on the Environment is unique because
it is the children who actually conduct the conference. It's Junior Board is
comprised of children who work behind the scenes to make the conference
happen, chair the sessions and lead information discussions on their
concerns around the environment with their fellow delegates. The Junior
Board is appointed by UNEP representatives who will select a diverse group
of children from around the world.
The objectives of the conference include:
To increase children's understanding of environmental issues through the
sharing of experiences and opinions on the environment;
To improve the environment by sharing best practices and encouraging new
initiatives;
To provide opportunities for children to create new relationships and remove
artificial ethnic barriers as well as to form friendships lasting well
beyond the Conference;
To provide opportunities for children to collectively voice their concerns
for the environment;
To inspire children to think globally and act locally.
