Este evento es parte de otro evento, World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
Information and communication technologies play a major role in the future of our societies, especially in education, culture, democratic participation, economic development and more besides.
Local authorities have a decisive role to play in all these areas. Whether in schools, access and training to learn these technologies, or co-operation and development aid, it is in local programmes that the battle to make the potential of electronic networks and their uses benefit the largest number of people becomes a reality.
This is why, in the framework of preparing the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) to be held from 10 to 12 December 2003 at Geneva, the cities of Lyon and Geneva have taken the joint initiative to organise Cities e World-Lyon 2003, the first world summit of cities and local authorities on the information society.
Held at Lyon from 4 to 5 December 2003, Cities e World- Lyon 2003 will bring together the mayors and elected local representatives from five continents as well as representatives from economic, financial, community and media circles involved in local life.
The aim of this meeting is to facilitate taking into account the specific perspectives of cities and regions by the World Summit of heads of state and government. It will also highlight and make known the initiatives taken by cities and local authorities as well as those of the private sector and civil society.
Cities e World-Lyon 2003 is therefore a special occasion in the process of international consultation on the information society. It will conclude reflection carried out through 2003 during the preparatory meetings of Shanghai (China), Curitiba (Brazil) and Nouakchott (Mauritania), organised in partnership with UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research).
The summit's conclusions in the "Lyon Declaration" will be presented to the heads of state and government meeting at Geneva by a delegation of mayors and local elected representatives from five continents.
