Economic Burden of Malaria - Posted By: Chukwu Mercy

It is estimated that 350 to 500 million cases of malaria occur each year; more than 80% of these are in sub-Saharan Africa.

Malaria causes more than one million deaths per year globally:

-Approximately one death every 30 seconds

-90% of malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa

-90% of malaria deaths are of children less than five years of age

In areas with moderate to high level transmission, malaria is a leading cause of moderate and severe anemia, which is a major cause of mortality in young children and pregnant women.

Countries heavily affected by malaria have an estimated 1% lower growth of gross domestic product (GDP).
In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is the leading cause of school and work absenteeism.
Children who suffer repeated attacks of malaria are less able to learn and perform less well in school. In addition, children who have severe malaria during early childhood often are left with permanent cognitive deficits.
