This Fall, youth, educators and NGOs across Europe will have the opportunity to
contribute to strengthening local environmental movements, through a series of
environmental forums organized by Tread Lightly, a program of TakingITGlobal
supported by the Staples Foundation. In October of 2011, young people, educators, and
environmentalists will gather in London, Paris, Milan, Amsterdam and Oslo, to discuss
pressing issues, formulate recommendations for the Rio+20 Earth Summit agenda, and
learn how they can reduce their own ecological footprints through the Tread Lightly
program.
We will continue on our path to inspire youth and educators by connecting with the Road
to Rio+20 youth mobilization movement, hosting for individuals and
organizations who are passionate about environmental issues and want to learn
more about what they can do to make a difference. The outcomes of each forum will
contribute towards the milestone UN Rio+20 Earth Summit, taking place in Rio de
Janeiro in June 2012. This summit will honour the 20th anniversary of the original 1992
Earth Summit, which was an important turning point in global environmental policy and
the drive towards sustainability. Forums will bring together relevant stakeholders to
gather youth policy inputs towards the zero draft of the Rio+20 text compiled by
PeaceChild International, TakingITGlobal and other civil society organizations. Events
will include time for networking and refreshments, to allow for further collaboration and more
strategic coordination of efforts among members of the European environmental
movement.
