DetailsSobre
Volunteering brings benefits to both society at
large and the individual volunteer. There are two
major benefits of volunteering.
First, an economic one: volunteering makes an
important economic contribution to society. .
Volunteering adds to the overall economic output of a
country and reduces the burden on government spending.
But volunteering has a second and perhaps more
important benefit: volunteering helps in the building
of strong and cohesive communities. It fosters trust
between citizens and helps develop norms of solidarity
and reciprocity which are essential to stable
communities.

Volunteerism has deep roots in the Middle East;
particularly in Egypt where it emerged as a major
force in the 19th Century and continued as such well
into the 20th. The spirit of volunteerism permeates
Egyptian society and is reflected in a variety of
social and religious practices that encourage helping
and giving to others. Volunteers have long been
important in helping those who are less fortunate.
This has been particularly true for isolated rural
areas where harsh conditions make it essential that
individuals help each other.

As an example of the volunteer work in Egypt: The
Sustainable development association (SDA). SDA serves
as an interface tool between the Private Sector and
the Public Sector on one hand and Youth on the other
hand, and this role has to be in action via the civil
society organizations. Our aim is to help the Youth
believe in themselves and their dreams. We want
everyone to come up with meaningful ideas and creative
projects to serve, on the local level, their country
and local community and on the global level the WORLD.
SDA will help youth make their voices heard.

The YES Country Network in Egypt, a project of
SDA, is a collaboration of youth organizations, NGOs,
individuals and other groups. YES has prepared the
Global Youth Employment Summit and is committed to
prepare for the Decade Campaign of Action that will
follow. It has a goal of bringing together diverse
partners to face the challenge of youth unemployment.
