DetailsCos'è
All over the world, but especially in developing countries, the sustainability of cities is under pressure. Decision-makers at all levels are faced with the task of how to resolve urban problems from transportation to waste management, from drinking water supply to the preservation of urban green space. In urban areas across Africa, it cannot be over-emphasized that it is a time of great difficulty The majority of urban residents are living with fewer resources, capacities and hopes. Yet, over the next 25 years, 90 per cent of urban population growth will take place in developing countries. After 2020, population growth in developing countries will occur mainly in urban areas, as rural populations decline.
In Kenya, urban population tripled in size between 1980 and 1995, while the population growth rate in rural areas declined and is now less than half the urban rate. Urban services, infrastructure, and labor markets are stretched to the limit. This has produced problems ranging from poverty, to insecurity to diseases to water pollution. Problems of environmental sustainability specifically emission of greenhouse gases that trigger global climate change, threaten biodiversity and deplete water resources are bound to increase.
The forthcoming Smart City 2020 Nairobi Conference: Creating a Blueprint for the sustainable African City will focus on strategies for transforming African cities to become livable, safe, prosperous and sustainable through a comprehensive process of discussion among stakeholders, practitioners, development organizations, and theoretical researchers/academics around 12 major issues; 1. Safety, 2. Water, 3. Waste Management, 4. Poverty Eradication (Job Creation), 5. Education, 6.Health, 7.Housing and sanitation, 8.Good Governance & Accountability, 9. Information and Communication Technology 10. Transportation 11. Environment and Aesthetics 12.Tourism, culture and heritage.
