The World Conference Against Racism NGO Forum hosted by The South African NGO Coalition will take place in the city of Durban in South Africa.
"Bigotry, hatred, prejudice - these are the ugly symptoms of a sickness humanity has always and everywhere suffered. Racism can, will and must be defeated."
Kofi Annan United Nations Secretary-General
The fight against racism has been at the heart of the mission of the United Nations ever since its founding in the shadow of the horrors of the Second World War. Never again was the world to witness the persecution of people based on their race, the drafters of the United Nations Charter vowed.
The World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, to be held in South Africa in 2001, will be a unique opportunity to create a new world vision for the fight against racism in the twenty-first century. The Conference will focus on practical steps to eradicate racism by considering how to ensure that international standards and instruments are applied in efforts to combat it. It will also formulate recommendations for further action to combat bias and intolerance.
