Children UN special session on children: 19-21 September 2001
On 19-21 September 2001, for the first time in more than a decade, a global meeting of government leaders is being held specifically to explore ways of improving the rights of children and young people worldwide. One of the expected outcomes of this Special Session on Children (SSOC) is expanding ways for young people to participate and make a difference in their communities.
The Special Session is an important follow-up to the 1990 World Summit for Children where world leaders agreed on specific goals to improve the lives of children. Those goals included: increasing access to health services for women and children; reducing the spread of preventable diseases; creating more opportunities for education; providing clean water and better waste disposal; improving the food supply; and protecting children and young people from abuse, exploitation and other dangers.
Over three extraordinary days, participants at this UN Special Session on Children will review progress since the landmark World Summit on Children in 1990 and try to agree on what needs to be done.
Children's Forum:
UNICEF will facilitate a three-day Children's Forum for members of government and accredited NGO delegations under the age of 18 who will attend the Special Session of the General Assembly on Children. The Forum, which is a side event of UNSSGA on Children, will be held in New York from 16-18 September 2001.
