DESCRIPTION
2000 youth leaders from every
sector and field namely Government, Business, Education, Law,
Medicine, Science, Religion, Arts, Technology, Sports, Media,
Agriculture and many Youth Organizations, will gather for the first ever World Youth
Peace Summit. Attendees will also include Nobel Laureates, Honorary
Guest Celebrities, Religious and Spiritual Leaders, International
Dignitaries, Scholars, Civic Leaders, Arts and Sports Personalities.
This Historic gathering will focus on informing and educating youth
leaders on critical issues, such as, AIDS/Health, poverty,
unemployment, violence, environmental degradation, development etc.
and on empowering them to take action to resolve these issues. The
Summit will provide a framework for youth leadership training so that
the leaders of tomorrow will be better equipped to cope with the
challenges facing them.
MISSION AND GOALS
To build a forum for young leaders from all regions, cultures,
religions, and genders whereby they can unite and pledge a commitment
to work collectively toward the achievement of world peace;
To create a global network of young people committed to peace-
building;
To focus on issues affecting youth and work towards finding solutions
that will change the prospects for the future of the next generation;
To develop and promote mutual understanding, respect and harmony
among young people, who will become a new generation of global
citizens;
To identify talented youth with leadership potential from all parts
of the world;
To educate young people about the many critical issues their
generation faces-weapons of mass destruction, international terrorism
and conflict, environmental degradation and climate change, AIDS and
its social consequences, poverty and development, education and
employment, drug abuse and juvenile delinquency, among many other
issues;
To provide a moral and spiritual vision for addressing these issues.
To develop an understanding that spiritual resources are an essential
aspect of creating a peaceful and sustainable world; and
To communicate to world leaders that young people must have a say in
their own future.
RATIONALE
Of the 6 billion people living in the world today, more than 50% of
the population is between the ages of 15-24. The young people who
will assume leadership in the future are facing many challenges that
generations before them have not. The Coalition to Stop the Use of
Child Soldiers reports that 120, 000 children under the age of 18 are
participating in armed conflict across Africa. Additional studies are
being conducted in Asia, Europe and South America on the abduction,
trafficking and military recruitment of youth. According to the World
Health Organization's report on Health and Violence, "armed violence
is one of the leading causes of death for people between the ages of
15-44 and about 35 people are killed every hour as a direct result of
armed conflict".
Young people are the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of
violence, war and AIDS. Global warming and the depletion of natural
resources threaten their future. 'Population Reports', by Johns
Hopkins University has found that nearly 12 million young people are
living with HIV/AIDS in the world today. It is the fourth largest
cause of death globally and the leading cause of death in Africa.
Solutions for global problems such as these will require the
collaboration of peoples from all regions, religions, cultures,
genders and ages to ensure the prosperity of the world. While the
global community and its governments have begun to pave the way, a
brighter future lies in the hands of the next generation.
Technological advances and communication have brought young people
from across the globe closer together. Media, the Internet and
transportation have helped to cross the traditional borders.
However, direct dialogue and personal interaction is only one step in
understanding. The mission of the Youth Summit is to provide a
framework that goes beyond the abstracts of dialogue by fostering a
stronger foundation through spirituality, from which mutual
understanding and effective leadership skills can grow.
OUTCOMES
