ABOUT THE JUROR
Ralph Gibson was born in Los Angeles, California and has made New York and France the prime subjects of his photographic vision. His keen sense for detail focuses on singular subjects, isolating pure shapes and forms. His high contrast printing technique lends a dramatic minimalist and sometimes surrealistic view of his subject. As Mr. Gibson puts it, "I embrace the abstract in photography and exist on a few bits of order extracted from the chaos of reality."
Mr. Gibson apprenticed in the 1960's, first with Dorothea Lange and later with Robert Frank. He has been the recipient of many honors and awards including the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, Leica Medal of Excellence Award, "150 Years of Photography" Award, Photographic Society of Japan, Grand Medal of the City of Arles, France, and was most recently in 2002 appointed Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France. His latest book is EX LIBRIS, (powerHouse Books, New York, 2001) an homage to the written word and the tomes
