Playa Giron - Relevance and Significance
It was in April when the enemy tainted the Cuban flag with lead and blood,
shadows and sorrow. It was in April when victory crowned the heroes, who overcame the invader in the first great defeat of US imperialism in America. In the green island, the glorious bells of rang hymns of victory. Military aggression against Cuba, conspired by the US government, counted on Cuban counter- revolutionaries, established primarily within the United
States.
The invasion included the disembarking on differing points around the bay of pigs.
Actions of assault and sabotage were made in various places within the capital. During the action of these assaults, Fe del Valle, a valiant revolutionary, had been killed between the bombings.
On April 15, the airports of San Antonio de los Ban~os, Cuidad Libertad, Havana
and Santiago de Cuba were bombed. The overall consequences of these actions were 7 dead and numerous injured. On the day of their burial, April 16, President Fidel Castro proclaims the Socialist character of the Revolution. The following day, the mercenary troops disembarked on the Bay of Pigs and Playa Larga, as they started to advance on Cuban territory.
The motto "No Pasaran" meaning "They Shall Not Pass", arose unanimously amongst the people. Full of courage, the combatants fought valour, without ceasing, for their nation. On those glorious days, Fidel's presence remained relevant, whom maintain at the front of all the operation.
These factors were decisive to achieve the final victory, reached on April 19.
Cuban woman were also present during the attack of the Bay of Pigs. Through the
Federation of Cuban Woman, they were first to defend their homeland, ready to overcome the greatest sacrifices, as was the case of Cira Garcia, fallen during these actions.
The Bay of Pigs also brings back nostalgic memories. How to forget Nemisia, that
beautiful carbon flower, which inspired one of the most moving poems by the Nabori native. The Chosen One of the White Shoes. She saw how the birds of fire killing her mother, injured her siblings and her grandmother. The enemy had arrived to cover the precious light that the Revolution had sowed between the wetlands, but bit the dust of defeat.
43 years have passed, and the Bay of Pigs is still a log in the memory. Although
mostly, it meant the triumph of the revolutionary ideals, not only within Cuba but also in Latin America; the ideals which will always live on to mark the path of history. |
