Bush Radio has hosted Radio Kidocracy Konference (RKK) since 2000. From 2001 to 2003, the event focused on drafting a Children's Radio Manifesto in response to rising interest in, and demand for, quality children's radio broadcasting and in support of the initiative by the South African department of communication to widen provision in this field. The work of those conferences led in 2004 to the completion of The Radio Manifesto, an international document that challenges broadcasters to make radio with and for children and youth. The Radio Manifesto was announced to the world at the Rio Summit on Children and Media in April 2004.
The goal of RKK 2004 is to develop the idea of a participatory youth radio conference with radio production and recording workshops involving all delegates in active radio-making projects.
RKK 2004 intends to focus its attention on "Socialization - How Are Youth Socialized?" The conference will aim to address the following:
* Gender (how are youth socialised to "do" gender);
* Linguistics (what role does language play in the socialisation process?);
* Role of the Media (how are images shaped and reinforced?); and,
* Politics of Power (legislation, policy making).
According to the organisers, the long-term plan is for Radio Kidocracy to become an annual youth media event with global links to all levels of children's and youth radio activity from Internet radio to the local efforts of grassroots NGOs, and national and international radio broadcasters. |
