| One of the catastrophic effects of the long civil war in sri lanka has been the reported 1,500,000 landmines scattered around the country. These landmines prevent internally displaced peoples (idps) from returning to their homes; are a daily threat to the lives of people living in many different areas in sri lanka; and directly restrict local reconstruction and development projects across the country. The japan center for conflict prevention (jccp) is presently engaged in humanitarian demining activities in sri lanka, attempting to directly improve the situation for idps and all people in the country, on economic, development, and direct humanitarian levels. Jccp will proudly present, on wednesday 29th september, a detailed overview of our humanitarian demining activities, to be delivered by mr. Ryogo tatsumi and mr. Yasuhiro ichishi (see photo), both jccp technical advisors who are presently working in sri lanka and have been with the project since it started. They will give a joint presentation on the situation in sri lanka, their experiences in humanitarian demining, and will gladly answer any questions you may have. We hope you will join us for the evening. Nb. The presentation will be given in japanese, but you are welcome to ask questions in english. Depending on demand, we will offer simple on-site english interpretation (please contact jccp for details). |
